90’s boyband Backstreet Boys have broken another Guinness World Record! During their annual cruise through the Mediterranean Sea, they were among 30 people who achieved the Guinness World Record title for the most nationalities in a jacuzzi!

The official attempt was verified by Guinness World Records Adjudicator Rob Malloy on board the Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship in Florence, Italy on Friday 13th May 2016.

The record attempt was held as part of a fun and exciting activity to engage with fans on the annual cruise. 30 nationalities including participants from France, Switzerland and Italy took to the jacuzzi along with the band and had to remain inside for a total of five minutes in order to achieve the record. The previous record was 26 and was achieved by Jacuzzi Outlet, in Moraira, Spain, on November 18 2012.

Band member A.J McLean said: “It has been great to take part in a Guinness World Records attempt and to do it with our fans has been amazing. We felt like we wanted to do something together and to add world record to our achievements is incredible.”

Guinness World Records Adjudicator Rob Malloy added: “It’s always fun to adjudicate record attempts like this one, there was a great atmosphere on board the cruise ship and everybody got involved to support those taking part. Many of those involved were excited to be meeting their childhood heroes, helping the official attempt to go swimmingly and as an adjudicator – I want it that way!”

Of course, this isn’t the first Guinness World Record held by the Backstreet Boys. Musically, they hold the record for the Best-selling album in the USA by a boyband. They gained this record after releasing Millennium in 1999, which sold 12.25 million copies in the US alone by the end of 2014. The Grammy-nominated album was certified by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipments of 13 million units and holds the record for the most shipments for one album in a calendar year – 11 million units in 1999. To date, the band have sold over 130,000,000 records worldwide.

Now that they hold a new title, we wonder if the Backstreet Boys will attempt to break their own record on their cruise next year? We definitely think there’s enough room for a few more people in that jacuzzi!
