Tributes are pouring in for a top barrister and ex-soldier who has died suddenly, just days before Christmas.
Dave Garratt, who’s clients included NRL stars Payne Haas, Kotoni Staggs and coach Anthony Seibold, was found dead at his Gold Coast home on Thursday night.
His body was found by barrister and close friend David Funch, the Courier Mail has reported.
The announcement was made by Howden Saggers Lawyers where Mr Garratt worked.
“Howden Saggers Lawyers are today mourning the tragic and unexpected loss of its director Dave Garratt,” the law firm said on Facebook
“Dave’s life was one of service, both to Australia and to justice. This will forever be how we remember him.”
He’s been remembered as a “truly amazing man” by loved ones and a “rock” to his clients.
“This is unfathomable. Such a great loss to all that knew Dave. So very very sad,” one person said on social media.
“The world has lost a beautiful human being, an excellent well respected lawyer and an all round top bloke,” another said.
“RIP Digger. Brave soul you were. You served your country with honour and did your family proud.”
It’s understood Mr Garratt leaves behind a young son.
Mr Garratt’s prominent law career followed his years as a soldier in the Australian Army.
He joined the army at age 17 after finishing school in Year 9.
He was inspired to complete a law degree after seeing digger mates being punished after opening fire on a car which did not stop when commanded to by a night patrol.
“The simple fact was that these guys that were mates of mine were presumed to be guilty,” he told the Gold Coast Bulletin.
“There was no presumption of innocence and they were ostracised.”
The soldiers were cleared of wrongdoing in 2008.
