James Handschy Obituary, Death – A personal locator beacon located on the Bright Angel Trail, approximately 1.5 miles north of Havasupai Gardens, issued an urgent situation alert to the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center on November 16. As soon as a rescuer received word that a hiker had become unresponsive, they set out on foot from Havasupai Gardens in an effort to locate the victim. By helicopter, the National Park Service (NPS) delivered additional search and rescue personnel to the location. It was determined by the rangers upon their arrival that the hiker had died.

The fatality has been identified as a 65-year-old man who was attempting to hike from the South Rim to the river and back at the time of the tragedy.
A personal locator beacon located on the Bright Angel Trail, approximately 1.5 miles north of Havasupai Gardens, notified the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center at approximately 1:30 p.m. on November 16 regarding the occurrence of an emergency. As soon as a rescuer received word that a hiker had become unresponsive, they set out on foot from Havasupai Gardens in an effort to locate the victim.

By helicopter, the National Park Service (NPS) delivered additional search and rescue personnel to the location. It was determined by the rangers upon their arrival that the hiker had died. 65-year-old James Handschy was fatally struck while attempting to ascend from the South Rim to the river and back. Handschy, a native of Oracle, Arizona, was fatally struck while attempting the ascent. An investigation into the incident is presently underway between the National Park Service (NPS) and the Coconino County Medical Examiner. There is no further information that can be furnished at this time.
