He was raised in Utah.
In 2003, Khyl was involved in a plane crash alongside his brother-in-law Christopher Ostler and 2 other passengers off the coast of Alaska. Piloting the plane was his father-in-law Gary Ostler. Khyl managed to survive and be rescued, however, his father-in-law and brother-in-law were never found.
The first post that Khyl uploaded to his Instagram account was on January 15, 2012.
On November 25, 2015, Khyl and his wife Michelle started the family fun-filled YouTube channel titled The Shumway Show and the first video that was uploaded to it was titled Vlog Debut! — The Shumway Show!.
